The North West is a South African province situated in the northern part of the country bordering Botswana and there are three main areas to visit which are the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa and boasts really good Big 5 sightings and is home to the endangered wild dog. The area in which the reserve is used to be farm land, but because farming was not successful in that part of the country the South African government decided to create a national park instead and also to uplift the otherwise poor surrounding areas. Madikwe is malaria free and offers excellent game viewing experiences. Madikwe features a thriving wild dog population even though it is an endangered species and they are not very common in any other reserve.
The Pilanesberg National Park has a fascinating story of how it came to be. It is set within the crater of an ancient volcano which resulted beautiful landscapes and rock formations. It is probably the most accessible Big 5 game reserve as it is only a 3 hour drive from Johannesburg its makes for a quick weekend getaway or add on to your stay in Johannesburg. The Pilanesberg vegetation is a combination of the dry Kalahari and the wet Lowveld making it a good habitat for practically all animals and plants. It is also malaria free making it hassle free and easy especially for families with young children.
Sun City is luxury resort which is family friendly resort and offers a host of activities for any age.
